lyrics

Original Lyrics:

Cobblestone and lantern lit, that’s how I imagine it.
Hair like autumn’s final leaves, a charcoal city in relief.

Crooked smiles and crooked streets, crooked appetites beneath.
Who would tempt the muse’s wrath? Fall asleep inside the bath.

She combs her hair and it’s the fall of man
Her skin so rare her touch the sleight of hand
Over again she takes the laudanum
Here she comes, here she comes.

At the windows at the doors, they’re all clamouring for more.
To what end will this go on? Our heroine is overdrawn.

Then that feeling starts to stir, the world is far too much with her.
Just one sip she floats away, on a February day.

She combs her hair and it’s the fall of man
Her skin so rare her touch the sleight of hand
Over again she takes the laudanum
Here she comes, here she comes.

In his room at night, seven years unseasonably cold
It’s enough to make him mad.
By the fireside, horrifying notions fill his mind
That could push him to the edge.
