The Muse 03:41
Cobblestone and lantern lit, that’s how I imagine it. Hair like autumn’s final leaves, a charcoal city in relief. Crooked smiles and crooked streets, crooked appetites beneath. Who would tempt the muse’s wrath? Fall asleep inside the bath. She combs her hair and it’s the fall of man Her skin so rare her touch the sleight of hand Over again she takes the laudanum Here she comes, here she comes. At the windows at the doors, they’re all clamouring for more. To what end will this go on? Our heroine is overdrawn. Then that feeling starts to stir, the world is far too much with her. Just one sip she floats away, on a February day. She combs her hair and it’s the fall of man Her skin so rare her touch the sleight of hand Over again she takes the laudanum Here she comes, here she comes. In his room at night, seven years unseasonably cold It’s enough to make him mad. By the fireside, horrifying notions fill his mind That could push him to the edge.

The Ghost 04:46
I haunt your streets at night Like a ghost I roam In an astral projection I follow you home Do your eyes adjust? Is it all pretend? Are we all speaking in tongues in the end? I’ve seen shadows in the doorway When I’m all alone And there’s footsteps on the staircase When no one else is home And there’s voices in the attic And my closet’s full of bones And those skeletons are laughing And trying on my clothes Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Does it keep you up all night? Cause it keeps me up all night in the afterlife. I’ve got a speaker in the parlour And it’s playing evil tunes And the rocking chair keeps moving Even when I leave the room And the priest is at the doorway I can hear his desperate cries That there’s evil in these four walls But I’m the only one inside Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Does it keep you up all night? Cause it keeps me up all night in the afterlife. I’ve got a Ouija board but I’m scared I’ve got a crystal ball and a lock of her hair (Something’s coming down the stairs Something’s coming down the stairs) I’ve got an ancient book full of prayers (Something’s coming down the stairs, Something’s coming down the stairs) I can’t tell you how but I know that it’s there Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Maybe the ghost is me (I’ve seen you standing there) Does it keep you up all night? Cause it keeps me up all night in the afterlife.

The Romantic 02:36
I want to be a romantic Stand at the wide edge of the living world Take me away cover my eyes that’s fine I’ll never see your face again I’ll never see it again ‘Til love and pain can take, take me away Obviously I’m indifferent Twisting my arm until it breaks at the joint Twisting my words, carve out of my tongue that’s fine I’ll never speak your name again I’ll never speak your name again ‘Til love and fame can take, take me away To some sacred place To some sacred place To some sacred place To some sacred place

The Cemetery 03:25
(Bring your pitchforks bring your fire Bring some music for the choir) Bring your pitchforks bring your fire Bring some music for the choir Paint a picture in my mind Use the words I left behind Nobody ever sleeps this deeply Nobody ever leaves completely Wait, wait Hover at the cemetery gate For my sake On the steps of Heaven’s spire Did the angels turn in shame? Did they mistake your hair for fire? Did it warm them all same? Nobody ever sleeps this deeply Nobody ever leaves completely Wait, wait Hover at the cemetery gate For my sake

Oh you sleep so deep Like the portrait that revealed ya When you posed just like Ophelia In a cold and lonely stream And if Ford Madox Brown could only see ya Dante’s Ophelia Tales aren’t told of the muse anymore Inside the Brotherhood Society doors Where your reflection used to be I guess I’ll come around so I can see ya Dante’s Ophelia Oh you sleep so deep There are people here that need ya All the souls who tried to heal ya And the cold and lonely days They turn to quiet nights Where I can feel ya Dante’s Ophelia Oh you sleep so deep Like the portrait that revealed ya When you posed just like Ophelia In a cold and lonely stream And if Ford Madox Brown could only see ya Dante’s Ophelia

about

"Sleep So Deep" is The Origin’s newest EP release — The Origin’s third release in nine months! The album was inspired by a piece of literary history that has resonated with band member Tom Hayward since first hearing the story as an undergraduate English major.

The songs are loosely based on the Victorian poet Dante Gabriel Rosetti and his wife and muse, Elizabeth Siddall. They chronicle Siddall’s drug addiction and untimely death, which left Rossetti to wrestle with a failing literary career and ultimately a heavy decision to exhume his wife’s body to reclaim poems he buried with her.

The Sleep So Deep EP weaves together different genres and influences around cohesive themes of loss, temptation, and isolation. Heavy lyrics are often juxtaposed with lighthearted instrumentation. The songs imbue a level of humanity and relatability to Rossetti and Siddall - two characters whose shared story exemplifies gothic romance.

“Sleep So Deep" is the culmination of months of making music through COVID-19 lockdowns. Collaborating on an album with social restrictions was both a challenge and an opportunity. The experience provided an understanding of what Rossetti might have gone through in the absence of his wife — the passage of time alone and the use of art as an outlet.

We hope you enjoy “Sleep So Deep.”
